( CNN) Many people chug caffeine-packed coffee or scarf down an energy bar to wake up, but what should you eat to wind down?
This summer enhance your recipes, eradicate extra trips to the grocery store and cultivate a connection with nature with a few sprigs or foliages from an herb plant youve grown yourself. Herbs tie all gardeners together, whether grown in a large landscape or in pots on a windowsill, on their own or interplanted with ornamentals, by experienced or first-time gardeners. Whether herb gardening is a summer ritual or your first edible venture, here are 11 herbs we feel no gardener should fare without this summer.
( Ocimum spp)
Basils bright, showy foliages and intensely sweet perfume typify summer gardens and dishes. Many edible gardeners start with basil, and the number of available varieties will never leave you tired of its refreshing flavor. In autumn dry or freeze it for use the rest of the year. Basil grows easily from seed or nursery seedlings.
( Salvia officinalis )
With its velvety gray leaves and soft mounding habit, sage softens garden edges and fills in planter corners. Sage necessitates little water once established and will make all season long in full sunlight( partial tint in intense heat ). Harvested leaves can be dried and stored for longer use. Be is conscious that not all Salvia is edible, so check before you eat. Sage can be grown from seed, though seedlings tend to produce better results.
( Thymus vulgaris )
One of the most commonly called-for herbs, thyme is just one of the easiest to grow. Plant it in a receptacle or allow it to spread as a ground cover. Provide sun, good drainage and not too much water, and this low-maintenance edible essential will stick around for many snacks to come. Like sage , not all thyme species are edible, so check before you plant. Thyme can be grown from seed or seedlings.
( Lavandula spp)
Lavender tops many gardeners listings for ornamental value alone; resilience, drought tolerance and the fact that its a bee magnet merely further show why this sun-loving Mediterranean native is a great herb garden addition. Oh, and its a killer cocktail ingredient. Choice from a variety of widely available species, and plant it in receptacles or directly in the ground.
( Anethum graveolens )
Dill is one of the few herbs on this list that does best when grown from seed. Sow the seeds through summer in full sunlight. Its tolerant of rocky clay but needs good drainage and enough room to establish its taproot. Dill is an annual, but it can self-seed and will most likely return the following year. If youd like to avoid unwanted volunteers, cut back the flower heads and collect the seeds to plant where you want them.
( Origanum spp)
Oregano is another one of those herbs that really dont put up a fuss. Plant oregano or its milder relative, sweet marjoram, anywhere that receives good sunlight and has good drainage. Harvest the leaves just when its flower buds are forming. These plants grow well from seedlings.
( Mentha spp)
Grown in a pot by the kitchen, fresh mint freshens everything from dressings, salads and sides to drinks and desserts with a sprig or two. It grows best in full sunshine to partial tint and prefers regular water. It has a tendency to spread where its unwanted, so many suggest growing mint in receptacles. Grow it from seedlings.
( Rosmarinus officinalis )
It can be easy to forget that this tough-as-nails perennial is also edible. Seen cascading over rocky hillsides or potted on sun-drenched patios, rosemary is a garden mainstay in warmer climates. In regions that find freezing temperatures, or for cooks who may want their herbs closer than outside the back entrance, rosemary grows well in receptacles and can easily be brought inside. One whiff of its earthy fragrance and you can almost feel the heat of the Tuscan countryside. Seeds are available, but rosemary does best when grown from small plants.
( Cymbopogon citratus )
Dive into the exotic edibles with lemongrass, use it to season soups, teas and more. This strappy plant will thrive in full sunlight to partial shade with regular water. Though it may die down to the ground in winter, it will resuscitate in spring. Lemongrass does best in mild climates, or it is feasible to planted in a receptacle and brought inside. Plant trims or divisions for best results.
( Petroselinum crispum )
New ranges are adding pizzazz to the world of parsley. Though its treated as a summertime harvest in colder climates, gardeners in warmer regions can grow parsley year-round. Be sure to prefer a site with sheltered afternoons, since too much summertime hot can scorch it. Plant parsley from seeds or seedlings.
( Artemisia dracunculus Sativa)
A French cuisine staple, tarragon takes an herb garden beyond the basic. French tarragon ( Artemisia dracunculus Sativa) is prized for its culinary value, tasting and reeking similar to anise or licorice. French tarragon is a little fussier to grow, opting afternoon shade and regular water, but is the best to its implementation of flavor. Gardeners in more extreme climates may turn to Russian tarragon or Mexican tarragon, which are easier to grow but less flavorful. French tarragon must be grown from trims or seedlings.

With 61 percent of American office employees working in open or shared spaces now, run are the days when you could shut your doorway and do desk dips in the privacy rights of your own office. So what’s a girl looking to squeeze in a little workout during the course of its workday to do? The good news is you don’t have to forgo an office exercise routine even if you sit smack dab in the middle of your open office floor. All you have to do is suppose a little more strategically about the kinds of workouts you choose. We’ve consulted with experts to come up with a subtle workout routine that should go( largely) under the radar in the office. Here are 7 exercises you can do without anyone noticing.
It’s clear no one want to be. The girl so obsessed with exercise, she can’t even imagine living any part of her life without it( or her yoga pants ). That being said, if your coworkers do happen to notification, it’s truly not the end of the world. There are a lot worse things you could be doing in the middle of the working day than getting in an inconspicuous workout at your desk. Am I right?
Yoga instructor Anita Perry suggests beginning with the basics by focusing first on your breathing, which allows your muscles to receive much-needed oxygen. Perry recommends inhaling for four countings, holding for four counts, and exhaling for another four.
Try to keep up this pattern through each little workout to come.
Once you’ve mastered your breathing, it’s time to start moving those muscles. Self-proclaimed lazy millennial Jade Phoenix, who has personal experience trying to maintain her fitness in the office, tells me you can keep your heels on for this first one.
Start in an upright, seated stance at your desk, with your hands holding your chair’s armrests, your knees and feet together. On an breath, raise your knees until your toes leave the floor. Return to your starting position simply long enough to tap your toes to the ground, then repeat the motion. Try to maintain these fluid movements for around 30 seconds at a time.
After your toe touches, kick off those high heels and plant your feet on the ground. Maintain your toes grounded while you lift your heels as high as possible. Repeat up to around 20 times.
Finally, raise one leg at a time until it’s entirely straight, and hold the pose for about 10 seconds. Alternate between each leg. Health advocate Morgan Statt tells me that leg creates can strengthen your hip flexors as well as your abs. “As these parts of your body get stronger, ” Statt says, “you’ll likely experience better posture, fewer lower back problems, and ease of performing other exerts, such as yoga and running.”
This one is as simple as it sounds. Clench your buttocks for five seconds or so, take a short break, and repeat as desired. Fitness writer Max Robinson recommends this workout because it is easy to manage while undetected, and it is feasible to astonishingly effective- just take care not to pull any funny faces or sounds while clenching!
Butt crunches activate your glutes, which strengthens muscles and improves endurance. These benefits will likely improve your performance in other fitness activities over time.
Men, resist the temptation to skip this exercise. Women aren’t the only ones who benefit from kegels, which are able to prevent incontinence as you age.
Just tighten your pelvic floor muscles( as if you’ve stopped peeing midstream ), hold for a few seconds, and release.
When writer Dylann Crush spends eight hours at her desk, “the dreaded kegel” is one of her go-to exerts. Crush points out that kegels “can even be done during meetings with no one the wiser.”
Move on to your abs next by tightening them while you sit at your desk. Clench and hold for 10 seconds, and repeat the process three times. Health coach and champ powerlifter Robert Herbst says, “No one will know you are doing this if you keep a straight face, as there should be no movement.”
This method of targeting your belly won’t immediately change the way you seem and feel, but it will gradually activate the muscle fibers to enhance and strengthen your abs.
After tightening your abs, you can alternate between pushing your hands up against the underside of your desk and then pushing down against the top. Chiropractic doctor Dean Hoppenrath says these exercises will work your biceps and triceps respectively.
If you’re genuinely daring, you can do what he calls “reaching for the stars”- reach your limbs straight up to the sky( but no guarantees that you won’t attract a few gazes ).
In addition to a discreet office workout routine, “the best advice for desk workers is to stand sporadically, ” according to Herbst. Check to see if your company will buy you a standing desk, or you can set yourself a timer to remind you to stand for five minutes after every half hour sitting. Use every opportunity you can to stretch your legs, whether it’s walking to the coffee machine or going for a quick stroll around the block on your lunch break.
“The body thrives when challenged, even a little, ” Dr. Hoppenrath says, “and you will feel better in all aspects of life.” Look at office fitness as another challenge for yourself, and a chance to keep your body engaged in new ways.
A passenger plane caught fire on the runway at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport earlier today.
According to WSVN, the left engine of Dynamic Airways Flight 405, a Boeing 767, burst into flames as the plane was preparing for takeoff around 12:30 pm.
The pilot of a plane taxiing behind Flight 405, destined for Venezuela, reported fuel was leaking from the aircraft before the fire started about 30 seconds later, CNN reports.
Mike Dupuy, who was on another airliner at the airport, tweeted this video of the inferno.

A Republican fallback plan to repeal all of Obamacare without a replacement health program would lead to 32 million more people uninsured than under current law, the Congressional Budget Office said Wednesday.
That’s about 10 million more uninsured than the estimated 22 million people who wouldn’t be covered under a previous Senate Republican bill to replace many parts of Obamacare. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said the Senate may vote on the measure as soon as next week, though is supportive of it is uncertain.
Snuggie has won a lawsuit classifying it as a blanket not an item of garment( for tax purposes ), but its not the first tribunal combat to elicit chuckles
Its official: a Snuggie is not clothing and not only because you look stupid wearing one.
The blanket with sleeves is a blanket, a US federal court ruled last month.
The Snuggie was dubbed by the Guardian back in 2009 as the astonish manner hit of the recession, and now its had another win, with parent company Allstar Marketing Group successfully suing the United States government.
Of course, the lawsuit isnt just for funny headlines, but instead because the company wanted to change the the categories of the item so that it could pay reductions in import tariffs, noted the Washington Post, which first reported the case.
Imported garments, aka attire, get a 14.9% tariff, while imported blankets merely pay 8.5%.
So Allstar filed a lawsuit back in 2013 to assert the Snuggie had been improperly classified, since what kind of clothing doesnt even cover your hobo?
The subject merchandise was not intended to be worn by a human when that person is walk-to, argued the complaint filed by Allstar.
Apparently walking isnt defined as taking a step and pouring a kettle, as depicted in the infamous infomercial( simply dont spill your cuppa while jumping to the sofa ).

The plight of a four-year-old boy who nearly died after his mothers gave him 12 alternative medications has prompted physicians to warn against the treatments.
Doctors at Newham Hospital in east London said the mothers were “devastated” that their good purposes had induced him so unwell.
The boy took a dozen supplements supposedly to help treat his autism.
The National Autistic Society said it was crucial for physicians to talk through the risks of alternative therapies.
The boy developed a potentially fatal condition after taking supplements from a naturopath( natural health practitioner) for a number of months, which included vitamin D, camel’s milk, silver and Epsom bath salts.
He was admitted to A& E after losing 6.5 lbs( 3kg) over three weeks, suffered by symptoms including vomiting and extreme thirst.
Dr Catriona Boyd and Dr Abdul Moodambail, writing in the British Medical Journal Case Reports , said it was not until the son had been at Newham Hospital, which is part of St Bart’s Health Trust, for several days that his mother told them about the holistic supplements.
Dr Moodambail told the BBC: “This happens on many occasions with other patients as well.
“Often the mothers think that these supplements are natural, safe and do not cause any side effects or adverse effects, but this is not true in many cases like this.”
He added: “The situation was stark because the child developed vitamin D toxicity leading to the highest calcium levels, making the child quite unwell and this can even be fatal as well.”
The boy made a full recovery in 2 week after being treated with hyperhydration and drugs to reduce his calcium level.
Complementary and alternative medications( CAMs) are treatments that fall outside of mainstream healthcare Generally when a non-mainstream practise is used together with conventional medicine, it is considered “complementary” When a non-mainstream practice is used instead of conventional medication, it is considered “alternative” Examples of CAMS include homeopathy, acupuncture, osteopathy, chiropractic and herbal medicines Some complementary and alternative medications or therapies are based on principles and an evidence base that are not recognised by the majority of independent scientists Others have been proven to work for a limited number of health conditions, such as osteopathy, chiropractic and acupuncture for treating lower back ache When a person utilizes any health treatment – including a CAM – and experiences an improvement, this may be due to the placebo impact Osteopaths and chiropractors are regulated in the same way as mainstream medical professionals “Were not receiving” statutory professional regulation of any other CAM practitioners
On April 17, Pennsylvania became the most recent nation to pass medical marijuana legislation, which will take effect this month. And recently Ohios House of Representatives has passed a scheme to permit medical marijuana in the state.
Research suggests that marijuana or more specifially compounds in marjuana may have potential as a treatment for epilepsy and chronic ache, among other conditions. However, more research is needed to fully understand any potential health benefits from the substance.
As of this writing, 41 nations have legislation that permits medical marijuana in some form. However, the law in Texas is not considered functional, because it requires a physician to prescribe marijuana. Since marijuana is illegal under federal law, doctors cant prescribe it. They can only recommend it to patients. Louisianas law had the same flaw, but the states House of Representative merely voted on new legislation that should correct this problem.
As the director of the Research Institute on Addictions at the University at Buffalo and a researcher who studies social factors in the development of addictions, I follow many of the emerging trends in substance use.
When New York state passed legislation allowing for medical marijuana late in 2015, I began to collect information on the ways that the states were approaching this controversial issue.
As medical marijuana statutes become more common in the U.S ., its good to understand what, precisely, these state laws allow and what they dont. States are trying to strike a balance between access to medical marijuana for patients who might benefit, while also ensuring that these laws dont become a backdoor to full legalization. And, as I have found, there is a lot of variation in terms of what nations entail by medical marijuana. This can impact whether and how patients can access it and what conditions it can be used to treat.
What Is Medicinal About Marijuana ?
Lets start by looking at what medicinal properties marijuana actually has.
Marijuana consists of several hundred chemical components, but the most well known is tetrahydrocannabinol( THC ), which causes marijuanas high. It can also be used to treat nausea and puke. In fact, there are two FD-Aapproved synthetic versions of THC, Dronabinol( also called Marinol) and Cesemet, which are prescribed to treat nausea and vomiting for patients undergoing chemotherapy for cancer or to stimulate craving for patients with AIDS. A side effect of these drugs is euphoria, which means they can stimulate you high.
At the federal level, only these two medications are legal. THC or other extracts, whether synthetic or derived from the marijuana plant, are not.
The other marijuana compound with known medical applications at present is cannabidiol( CBD ). Unlike THC, CBD does not produce a high. There are no FD-Aapproved drugs based on CBD yet, although it is being studied as promising therapy for severe epilepsy and pain.
Proponents of medical marijuana argue that the combination of the chemical components present in the plant itself provides the most effective treatment for some medical symptoms. However, the amount of the medically important components distinguished from one plant to the next, and other potentially harmful components may also be present in the natural product. Research investigating this issue is critically needed.
Is this medical marijuana? That depends on the country. Eduardo Munoz/ Reuters
In Some States Medical Marijuana Mean Marijuana
The phrase medical marijuana might give you the image of people buying plants or dried marijuanas to smoke. Thats the suit in some states with medical marijuana laws, but not all.
In 21 states and the District of Columbia as of this writing, people can possess marijuana in plant sort for medical purposes. But, of course, there is plenty of variation between these 21 states.
For instance, in 15 of those states, laws permit people to cultivate marijuana plants for medicinal utilize. Restrictions on the number of plants vary from nation to country, but most of the states allow for 6-12 plants. And some of those states limit the number of matured versus immature or seedling plants people are allowed to have.
Several of these 15 nations allow home cultivation only under certain circumstances. For example, Massachusetts lets patients to cultivate plants if a state dispensary is not nearby or for fiscal reasons. Other countries necessitate the cultivation to be in a locked region or have other restrictions.
In six other nations, medical marijuana statutes allow people to possess usable marijuana, but prohibit them from cultivating the plant.
Still with me? Good. Those are just the states that permit people to possess marijuana or to cultivate plants to some degree or another.
And In Other States Medical Marijuana Means A Marijuana Extract
In 15 states, medical marijuana laws allow people to possess only one specific marijuana extract, CBD, the component that does not create a high. Possessing marijuana itself or cultivating plants isnt allowed.
If you live in Minnesota, New York or Pennsylvania, state laws prohibit smokeable marijuana but do allow marijuana extracts in nonsmokeable sorts, such as petroleums that can be vaporized, oral solutions and capsules. These products are fabricated with specific sums of THC and CBD.
Now that we have sorted out the different types of medical marijuana states permit, lets move on to the next major variation in medical marijuana legislation what conditions medical marijuanas can treat.
What Do States Say Medical Marijuana Can Treat ?
Most states that allow people to possess or cultivate marijuana for medical purposes allow its use to treat many medical conditions, including ache, nausea, HIV/ AIDS, seizures and glaucoma. As of now, nine countries also allow for the use of marijuana for post-traumatic stress disorder.
The most liberal of the states, California, runs a step further. Not only is medical marijuana permitted to treat all of these conditions, but also for any other major illness where marijuana has been deemed appropriate and has been recommended by a physician.
Medical marijuana doesnt always mean smokeable marijuana. David McNew/ Reuters
Remember, in some states the only medical marijuana permitted is an extract, CBD. One of these states, Kentucky, permits CBD only for people in a state-sponsored clinical trial.
The other 14 states that allow the use of CBD allow it merely for debilitating, serious or intractable epilepsy. Most of these states do not have dispensaries where CBD can be purchased, or they have one single source, usually a a medical school. So if a physician in these states determines that a patient would benefit from CBD, a patient would have to travel to another state with a dispensary that sells CBD.
And, of course, it gets even more complicated. Many of the states with legal dispensaries of CBD are not permitted to provide it to nonresidents. That means that even CBD though is legal in some states, it is effectively unavailable for most who might benefit.
Why Is There So Much Fluctuation Between The States ?
Marijuana is classified as a Schedule 1 Drug, different categories set aside for substances with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. This induces research on marijuana medical applications difficult.
As Nora Volkow, the Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, pointed out ,
medical research can and is being done with schedule I substances; however, there are strict regulations and administrative impediments associated with this status.
With research about medical marijuana moving so slowly, countries, often based on citizen lobbying endeavours, have acted, making legislation that might be based more on sentiment than on evidence.
Whatever your opinion is on the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes, the array of state and federal statutes regarding the use of medical marijuana is confusing and problematic for those who might benefit from such a programme designed. It is vitally important that we clear the impediments to clinical research on marijuana, and that we accelerate research addressing the potential benefits and harms.
Kenneth E. Leonard, Director, Senior Research Scientist at the Research Institute on Addictions, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York
